Previous Events

Dine and Duck

The creative minds behind the Auxiliary have produced several “Dine and Duck” progressive dinners and evening golf outings.

A scramble format started the adventures.  At sunset, appetizers, drinks and desserts were served throughout the illuminated nine-hole, par-3 course.  Guests dined while golfing and participated in lively putting contests and other games.  Non-golfers strolled along the course and enjoyed the camaraderie and refreshments.  Following the games, all guests were invited to return to the club house to enjoy live and silent auctions, a raffle, and a disc jockey for dancing and listening pleasure.

Adventures in Cooking

Event attendees learned some simple but elegant cooking techniques from David Maish, head chef and owner of David's Bistro in Des Plaines.  Chef David picked the wines to accent the meals prepared during the cooking classes and discussed each recipe.  Everyone who signed up for the classes enjoyed a complete dinner of the finished product.

Book Dramatizations

Barbara Rinella brought literature to life by becoming the characters found in two books, Queen and Country:  The Fifty-Year Reign of Elizabeth II by William Shawcross, and Alice:  Princess Andrew of Greece by Hugo Vickers, which focus on the life of the Queen, her husband, and her mother-in-law.

Rinella created a fascinating program of history as she became many recent First Ladies to tell their stories of power and perspective.

Based on Kati Marton’s book, Hidden Power:  Presidential Marriages That Shaped Our History, the role of the wives of the Presidents of the United States were analyzed with an understanding of the unique and exciting contribution each woman made.

Rinella dramatized Edward Klein's book, Farewell Jackie:  A Portrait of Her Final Days, acknowledging the impact of Jacqueline Kennedy's parents, her early years, her storybook marriage to John F. Kennedy, the tragedy in Dallas, and the many life changes that followed as the world watched her every move.

Prom Revisited

The Shelter, Inc. Auxiliary hosted "Prom Revisited," a blast to the past featuring international cuisine, a raffle, a silent auction, a hula hoop contest, and music from the 60s, 70s and 80s.
