Welcome to Shelter, Inc.

Since 1975, Shelter, Inc., a non-profit, licensed and accredited child welfare agency, has provided community based, emergency and longer-term housing for thousands of children and adolescents from birth through age 17 in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago, who are abused, neglected, dependent or in need of supervision.

Shelter, Inc. also provides programs such as a Healthy Families program and ongoing community education efforts to increase public awareness and the prevention of child abuse, neglect and other social problems directly impacting children and their families.

Shelter, Inc. is:

  • Accredited by the Council on Accreditation
  • Licensed by the State of Illinois Department of Children and Family Services
  • Governed by a Board of Directors
  • Supported by funds from Elk Grove, Palatine, Schaumburg, Vernon and Wheeling townships; United Way, local municipalities, corporations, foundations, private donations, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and the Illinois Department of Human Services.

Shelter's Influence on the Path to Success

It is routine for the staff at Shelter, Inc. to work with troubled youth and to see the impact that early abuse has on children as they develop into adolescence.  In our Older Adolescent Group Home for boys (OAGH), the program can serve the needs of residents for anywhere from a few months to a couple of years. This extended period of time allows our staff to establish relationships with these teens while working to prepare them for independent living.
