Older Adolescent Group Home

bulletProgram Type:  Structured group home and independent-living skills training
bulletClient Description:  Goal-oriented, adolescent males who are abused, neglected, dependent or troubled
bulletAge Eligibility:  16 and 17
bulletLength of Stay:  Up to two years
bulletLocation:  Arlington Heights, Illinois, serving the Northwest Suburbs of  Chicago, Illinois
bulletReferrals:  Referrals are reviewed for placement on a case-by-case basis.  Potential residents must:
bulletLive within Shelter’s service area
bulletBe age appropriate
bulletHave consent of their parent or guardian
bulletVisit the group home and be interviewed
bulletProvide a social history, a medical history and school transcripts for review in making a placement decision
bulletServices include:
bulletSafe and stable environment
bulletHealth screening for each adolescent by Shelter’s nursing consultant within 72 hours of placement
bulletPhysical examinations by a medical doctor for each adolescent
bulletVision and dental care
bulletClothing, prescription drugs, and personal hygiene items
bulletCareer preparation
bulletGroup and individual counseling
bulletFollow-up services 30, 90 and 180 days after discharge

Shelter’s Older Adolescent Group Home is the only group home program for older adolescent males in the Northwest Suburbs focusing on independent living skills.  Designed for goal-oriented adolescent males ages 16 and 17 who are abused, neglected, dependent or troubled, the home offers a longer-term, structured program that is based in a group home setting.  Residents are prepared to eventually live on their own and be self sufficient.  The staff work to motivate residents and facilitate the learning of basic living skills as adolescents gradually make the transition to independent living.

The group home seeks to teach residents basic living skills, including:

How to develop interpersonal relationship and socialization skills

bullet

How to plan, shop and prepare meals

bullet

How to access dental and medical care

bullet

How to get and keep a job

bullet

How to manage money

bullet

How to obtain and maintain a checking account

bulletHow to get and establish credit

Residents participate in the program for up to two years.  During participation, residents must:

Attend school full time

bullet

Maintain employment

bulletParticipate in weekly groups designed to teach independent living and interpersonal skills
bullet

Participate in individual counseling

bulletFollow rules and guidelines
