Shelter’s
Older Adolescent Group Home is the only group home
program for older adolescent males in the Northwest Suburbs focusing on
independent living skills.
Designed for goal-oriented adolescent males ages 16 and 17 who are
abused, neglected, dependent or troubled, the home offers a longer-term, structured
program that is based in a group home setting.
Residents are prepared to eventually live on their own and be self
sufficient. The staff work to
motivate residents and facilitate the learning of basic living skills as
adolescents gradually make the transition to independent living.
The
group home seeks to teach residents basic living skills, including:
 | How
to develop interpersonal relationship and socialization skills |
 | How
to plan, shop and prepare meals |
 | How
to access dental and medical care |
 | How
to get and keep a job |
 | How
to manage money |
 | How
to obtain and maintain a checking account |
 | How to get and establish credit |
Residents
participate in the program for up to two years. During participation, residents must:
