Allstate
Domestic Violence Financial Management Grant
The
Allstate Foundation, one of our longtime funders, recently awarded Shelter a
grant to implement the foundation’s Moving Ahead Through Financial
Management curriculum for Healthy
Families participants who are victims of domestic violence.
The course includes financial tools and information that empower survivors
of domestic abuse to assess their financial circumstances and engage
in short- and long-term planning to accomplish their personal goals.
Also
courtesy of Allstate, Tracy Small, Healthy Families director, and Lynn
Puckelwartz, supervisor, completed a three-day course that will allow them to
train Healthy Families staff to deliver the financial management curriculum to
their participants in the coming year.
We thank Shelter Board member and Allstate Vice
President and Assistant General Counsel Bill Vainisi and Allstate Midwest
Contributions Coordinator Agnes Norvich for recommending Shelter for this grant.
Experience
of a Lifetime
In January, one of our Older
Adolescent Group Home residents braved a wind chill of minus 23 degrees to
see the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers compete at Lambeau Field.
The youth, a diehard Packers and Brett Favre fan, was invited to
attend the NFC championship game by one of our group home counselors, Teddy
Fleming.
Prior to the game, the resident went on an inspiring
tour of nearby St. Norbert College, where he met several of Teddy’s former coaches
and instructors. The experience
made quite an impact on the resident, and he’s been talking ever since then
about the possibility of attending college.
Reactive
Attachment Disorder Seminar
Shelter will
present a seminar entitled “Manifestation
and Treatment of Reactive Attachment Disorder”
on Friday, April 11, 2008 at Schaumburg Township District Library in
Schaumburg. Three CEUs are
available to licensed social workers.
For more information about the seminar, please call
Shelter’s community education coordinator at 847.590.6190, ext. 40.
Elgin Thrift Shop
Since its opening in October 2007, the Shelter,
Inc. Thrift Shop in Elgin has helped Shelter bring in additional funds to benefit
our programs for children and families.
In turn, the shop has benefited the Elgin community by being a source for
affordable clothing, household items, books, toys, small appliances and
furniture.
The Elgin Thrift Shop is seeking additional volunteers
to sort and price items and to provide personal attention to shoppers.
If you would like to help Shelter make a difference in the lives of
abused and neglected children and you are able to commit a few hours each week,
please call Shelter’s volunteer coordinator at 847.590.6188, ext. 22.
And after spring cleaning this year, please consider donating
any clothing, furniture, or other items that you no longer need to either the
Elgin or Schaumburg Thrift Shop.
Trivia
Night for Shelter
In February, Kappa Delta
Northwest Suburban Alumni Association sponsored a trivia night to benefit
Shelter and the Kappa Delta KiDs Foundation at Queen of the Rosary Catholic
School in Elk Grove Village. The
event attracted hundreds of competitors, some dressed as characters and
celebrities, such as Elvis Presley, or in the costumes of their favorite era.
Guests competed in trivia categories as diverse as music, national
landmarks and the Northwest Suburbs. Raffles
and a silent auction rounded out the spirited evening.
We extend our thanks to Kappa Delta Northwest Alumni
Association for such a fun, creative and educational event for the benefit of
the children and families served by Shelter.
