Arlington Heights, IL — May 5, 2025 — Shelter Youth & Family Services is proud to announce that our Executive Director, Carina H. Santa Maria, MSW, LCSW, has been elected as a Village Trustee for the Village of Arlington Heights. A long-time resident and advocate for youth and families, Santa Maria brings deep experience in child welfare, community development, and social services to this new civic role.
While this new position is a testament to her leadership and commitment to public service, Santa Maria emphasizes that her role at Shelter will remain unchanged. “My role as Trustee will in no way affect my commitment to Shelter,” she stated. “I remain fully dedicated to our mission and the incredible work we do.”
As Village Trustee, Santa Maria sees a powerful opportunity to elevate the voice of vulnerable youth and families in local government conversations—particularly around housing, social services, and community safety. Her position allows her to advocate for policies that align closely with Shelter’s mission: increasing support for social services, expanding access to care, and fostering strong partnerships between municipalities and organizations serving the community.
“I’m deeply honored to have been elected as Village Trustee in the community where I live and work, Arlington Heights,” Santa Maria said. “My campaign was rooted in the belief that it truly takes a village—and I’m proud to continue serving our community with that spirit. This role gives me the privilege of bringing often-marginalized voices to the table and advocating for policies that reflect the needs and strengths of all our neighbors.”
This appointment further strengthens Shelter’s visibility and influence as a thought leader in child welfare and social policy—locally and beyond.
“We’re incredibly proud of Carina and excited for what this means—not only for her but for the communities we serve,” said Christine Roerig, Director of Marketing and Communications at Shelter. “This is a powerful reflection of her unwavering commitment to youth and families and will amplify Shelter’s voice in critical local conversations. This is a win for Arlington Heights and for every child and family we advocate for.”
For over 50 years, Shelter has provided emergency and long-term housing, support services, and advocacy for children and families across the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Under Santa Maria’s leadership, the organization continues to expand its impact, ensuring that every child has a safe home and a bright future.
